Door Handing

Handing means which way a door opens and is determined by the hinge location of the outside of the door. The closet shown in this image would be considered a right handing (meaning the hinges are located on the right hand side of the “outside” of the door). Knowing the handing is particularly important when you’re ordering a doorknob that needs to have a locking feature.

Door Function Definitions

Passage – For doors that do not need to be locked. Examples of these doors are closets, pantries, laundry rooms, etc.

Privacy – For doors that require a lock, such as a bedroom or bathroom.

Dummy – Are doorknobs that are non-turning. They are instead meant to be pulled open and pushed close. These are often used on French doors.
