Halloween Homemade Spookiness Decor: Mr. & Mrs. Mummy
Halloween is just around the corner and it’s time to get your spook on! If you’re looking for a creative and eerie addition to your Halloween decorations, I’ve got the perfect project for you: Mr. & Mrs. Mummy. These Mummy Heads can be used as a tablescape centerpiece, added to a charcuterie board, placed at the center of a spooky drinks tray or as part of your overall Halloween decor. Let me guide you through the simple steps to create your own creepy mummy heads for some homemade spookiness.
Materials Needed to Create Your Own Homemade Spookiness:
Stain the Gauze and Paper Towels: Begin by making a strong cup of coffee or tea. Pour it into a small bowl. Soak your paper towels and gauze in the coffee or tea, then wring out the excess liquid. Leave them crumpled and squeezed to dry. For added effect, drop a few more drops of the coffee/tea mixture onto the gauze and paper towels while they dry to create variation in the stain color.
Tear the Paper Towels: Once dried, carefully unwrap the paper towels and tear them into small sections, roughly 5”x5” or smaller. Don’t worry about making them perfect – mummies are supposed to look tattered and spooky!
Apply Mod Podge: Work on one section at a time, starting with the forehead of your Styrofoam head. Using a Mod Podge Brush, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the area. Place one piece of the ripped paper towel on the Mod Podge covered area and gently press it down, wrinkling the paper towel to create texture. After each paper towel piece is applied, generously apply Mod Podge over it to ensure it’s securely in place. Repeat this process, adding Mod Podge over each section of the head until the entire surface is covered.
Add Spooky Details: If you want to take it up a notch, you can use Mod Podge as glue to attach small plastic bugs or spiders to your mummy heads. This will give them an extra creepy look.
Allow to Dry: Allow your mummy heads to dry completely. This step ensures that the Mod Podge sets and your mummies take on a realistic, aged appearance.
Decorate the Base: Place your mummy heads on a tray or platter. Unravel the coffee/tea-dried gauze and add it to the base of the mummy head’s neck, piling it in a messy and disheveled manner around the head. This will give your mummies an authentic wrapped look.
Create the Spooky Atmosphere: To enhance the spookiness of your Mr. & Mrs. Mummy, consider adding additional Halloween-themed decor around them, such as crows, plastic spiders, worms or any other creepy crawlies that capture your Halloween spirit.
Bringing the Spooky Scene Together:
Creating Mr. & Mrs. Mummy for your Halloween decor is a fun and creative way to add an extra layer of homemade spookiness. These DIY mummies can serve as centerpieces, on charcuterie boards, as part of a spooky drinks tray or standalone decorations. For an eerie ambiance, get creative with your placement by adding mini lights for a mysterious glow, scatter fall leaves or use black iron taper candle holders for a truly bewitching touch.
